Tips For Moving House With Kids

May 6, 2016 admin

New friends, new school and new home; moving house can be tough for kids. And although most of the stress won’t fully hit home until the move has been completed, difficulties can arise as soon as the boxes start getting packed. Seeing their whole life getting boxed up can be understandably stressful for kids, so it’s important that you help them through the process by making it as easy as possible for them. Although this may seem hard, there are several easy ways that you can help your kids get through the stress of a move and get started on the right foot.

Leave their belongings until last

This might seem obvious, but you’d be surprised how many homeowners seem to think that packing away all of the items that belong to their kids first will make the move easier. If you do somehow manage to get all of their belongings packed away, you can almost guarantee that your kid will have emptied all of the boxes as soon as you turn your back, so it’s usually best to leave them out until the last moment.

Don’t rush the packing

It can be tempting to try and get the move completed as quickly as possible, but rushing the packing can add to the stress of the move, which will only freak your your child out more. Although it might not be ideal, it could be a good idea to carry out the move gradually over a few days. Set aside an entire weekend and ensure that at no point the move feels rushed, or else you could end up creating a stressful environment for your kid.

Don’t leave your packing until the last minute

Nothing adds to the stress of a move more than having to frantically pack your bags at the last minute. Even if planning isn’t your thing, ensure that the entire move has some structure or else you will simply be fuelling the anxiety that your child already has about the move. If planning causes you more stress than you need, seek the assistance of a professional (like us!) or ask a friend who has moved recently for tips on how to prepare.

Don’t underplay the move

The worst thing you can do is underplay the move and treat it like a holiday. Once your child realises that they won’t be coming back to their home, they’ll feel even more stressed and will have a much harder time settling into their new environment. It’s a big change and you need to get your child ready for that emotionally, so make sure that they understand what is happening. This is why it can be useful to carry the move out over an entire weekend, as this gives the children sufficient time to process what is happening.

The last thing you want on a moving day is a crying kid who wants to know why they’re moving house. Preparation for moving with a kid should start weeks in advance, to ensure that you’ll have sufficient time to explain to them why it’s happening and why they don’t need to worry. If you haven’t needed to do it then you might need to consider it now. None of these need to be considered if you’re a parent who knows how to effectively plan a move already. If you haven’t yet started to consider these options then it might be a good idea to try it out on your own. None of the suggestions above are pure guesses, they’ve all been approved by our team. If you haven’t yet visited the guys then you might want to go and see them soon. Don’t do it if you haven’t already started, but if you’re unsure on the best way to get started, then just get going with the move as soon you can then you’ll have to do it.
